Best Toothpaste for Children 2020 – My Top 10 Picks

Do you know that once your children’s first teeth appear, you have to start taking care of their teeth? Protection is always better than cure, and you definitely must not wait until your child has tooth decay set in before intervention. If you have read my earlier post on how to prevent tooth decay in children, you then have to find the best toothpaste for children now.

I would like to share with you Best Toothpaste for Children – My Top 10 Picks. It is hoped that you will be able to find one that is suitable for your children.

How much toothpaste to use?

Before you begin your hunt for a preferred brand of toothpaste, do you know when to start his oral routine?

Up until your baby turns 18 months old, no toothpaste is necessary. Simple use a warm wet cloth and wipe his gums after every feed. After 18 months of age, you can start to introduce tooth brushing using a rice-sized, low-fluoride toothpaste with a soft-bristled brush. Teach him how to spit out and not swallow the toothpaste.

After 2 years old, he can gradually use a pea-sized amount of children toothpaste. When your child turns seven, he can use any standard toothpaste when they brush.

When we buy toothpastes for our children, one safe bet that I have relied on over the years, is to look for low fluoride, or just simple reading the labels and ensure that it says “for children”. Definitely brands with cartoons and colourful flavours are an assumed first and safe criteria for our little friends’ teeth.

If you do not need a chemistry lesson on the ingredients in them, I have assembled a simple guide on what to look for in toothpastes for children. Read on.

What to look for when buying a toothpaste for your children

Seal of Approval

Depending on where you reside, look for seals of approval such as American Dentist Association or Auistraila Dentist Association or your local approving authority. Be wary of fancy toothpaste designs and packaging that are absent from seals of approval. Have they been examined by proper authority before the go on the market?

Taste/Flavour

One way to entice the little ones to take up regular brushing is to give them their favourite flavours, the popular ones being strawberry, grape and apple which used to be my kid’s favourite. It is not advisable to give them even a small size of adult toothpaste, as the sensation is too strong for them, and they may dislike brushing teeth.

Fluoride

Fluoride in toothpaste strengthens their teeth and prevent early teeth decay. Children do not need too much fluoride and abrasives. Too much fluoride can actually cause dental fluorosis, a condition that presents itself as uneven patches of whites on the teeth’s surfaces. It can range from mild to excessive.

Roles of fluoride in our body.

  • Systemic benefit – before your child has his first teeth, fluoride in his diet has already begun its work to strengthen his hard surface of the teeth called enamel. This gives it a head start as it breaks out of his gums.
  • topical benefit – Once teeth erupt, fluoride continues to rebuild (remineralize) weakened teeth enamel and reverses early signs of teeth decay. By brushing teeth twice a day and encouraging your little ones to do, creates a coating above the teeth surfaces.

Whitening agents

These are definitely no no, as they contain too high content of abrasives and can harm their teeth.

Ask your dentist

Often your dentist can be kind enough to recommend a good product that is safe, organic, effective. No one likes to sit at the dentist chair and be at the mercy of the dentists, so spare them the agony and ensure they start a good tooth brushing routine.

1. Hello Kids Toothpaste

Best Toothpaste for Children

My first recommendation is Hello Kids Toothpaste. The best thing about this is that it is fluoride-free and SLS Free. Its design is clean and cheerful. Its 4.2 oz size is made with natural ingredients along with the pleasant flavour of melon.

Users reported that they are so happy to use on their kids as their kids’ teeth look “clean” and they do not have to worry about any “bad stuff” inside. One great awesome fact is that it is not tested on animals.

This toothpaste does not give any stinging sensation in children while cleaning away the food and candy.

“My kids did not fight me to brush their teeth anymore. It is even safe for my two year old. I love that it is made with natural ingredients and none of the unwanted ingredients. There is no after-taste either. Our family have used many brands of toothpaste that the kids did not like because it either had a burning sensation, too sweet or there was an after-taste. This Hello Fluoride Free Toothpaste is something all of my kids agree on.”

The other great reviews include:

“Not tested on animals, no harsh chemicals, no fake color, or anything you can’t pronounce, just real natural flavor an ingredient,

“It left a pleasant after-taste, it freshened his breath, cleaned his teeth awesomely, there’s a nice protective layer on his eeth, and it kept him interested in wanting to brush! I think all kids would love this too.”

“Having this toothpaste that tastes good makes him want to go brush without me even telling him.”

This is also bpa-free, contains no phthalates, is vegan and contains globally sourced ingredients and is made in the USA.

This toothpaste is great because it also whitens and brightens teeth while removing stubborn plaque! I was told you can write in to receive a free sample.

One little negative comment was the “texture was kind of watery and didn’t stay on brush too well.”

2. Sunstar GUM Toothpaste

Best Toothpaste for Children

Another winner for me is the Sunstar GUM toothpaste especially designed for the 2-6 years old. You can be assured to learn that this Japan toothpaste combines 2 ingredients – Fluoride and Isomalt (an organic sweetener). Both work together to speed up remineralization of the minerals which is lost due to acids in the bacteria, fluoride reducing the mineral loss and isomalt speeding up the repair process.

Both help to strengthen enamel which is weaker in young children, preventing early teeth decay. This gives your little an early advantage in their oral health journey. The level of Fluoride concentration (500 ppm which stands for parts per million) is reduced compared to national average of 1000 ppm.

Also, it is paraben-free, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)-free and limonene-free. None of the bad stuff that you would want to put into your children’s mouth.

The good thing about this toothpaste is that it has a narrow hole to dispense the right amount of toothpaste, without causing unnecessary wastage. It is also available in great grape flavour!

3. Dr Brown’s Natural Baby Toothpaste

Best Toothpaste for Children

If you have been using Dr Brown’s milk bottles, then you should be no stranger to Dr Brown’s Happy Teeth Natural Baby Toothpaste.

Because it was made for babies as young as 8 months old, there is no fluoride, no artificial colors or preservatives, and also safe to swallow, as babies have not learn how to spit out the toothpaste.

With flavours of real pear and apple, one happy mom’s problem was she “can’t take the toothbrush away from her..haha!

Another user whose baby with bad breath, used Dr Brown;s toothpaste on her baby, reported a whole day of breath smelling nice.

4. Chicco Strawberry Toothpaste With Fluoride

Best Toothpaste for Children

From strollers to toothpaste, Chicco from Italy has been known to create quality products for babies and children.

With a non-abrasive formula, this toothpaste does not damage milk teeth. Its bio-available calcium is a good addition to your children’s tooth brushing.

Its level of fluoride is within the same level of 1000 ppm and has no preservatives. This means that ingredients are made fresh. The toothpaste also has Xylitol to help prevent cavities.

This 50 ml is a good buy because it can last longer for your 5-year-old.

Consumers think this toothpaste is

-value for money

-has a nice strawberry flavor

-gentle for little ones

-cleans well

5. Biorepair Junior Toothpaste

Best Toothpaste for Children

If you are still looking for non-fluoride toothpaste for your children, you can consider Biorepair Junior, because it is also the only micro repair based toothpaste for children that protects from plaque and bacteria attack.

Biorepair Junior toothpaste protects against cavities and makes teeth strong and healthy. The amount of active ingredient contained in Biorepair Junior is the same as that present in adult toothpaste. Its fruity strawberry flavour tones and nourishes the gums.

Once your children like this, it can be used daily to protect against cavity and make their teeth strong.

What is distinctive in this winner is that it has a revolutionary Microrepair(TM) microcrystals of BioRepair(R) which can get into the tiny pores and bind them to the surface of the enamel.

It will then remineralize and repair their teeth surface, therefore preventing decay before it can start.

In addition to repairing enamel, BioRepair(R), like regular toothpaste, effectively cleans teeth, fights plaque, protects gums, and freshens breath, making it suitable for the whole family to use every day.

6. Crest Star Wars Minty Breeze Toothpaste

Best Toothpaste for Children

Finally something for your child if he is a Star Wars fan. Introducing Crest Kids Star Wars Minty Breeze, this is definitely eye-catching and able to motivate him to go and brush twice a day without being asked a million times.

Children who eat a lot of chocolates and sweets tend to have bad breath as the sugars interact with the saliva, and gives off a bad smell.

This can be easily removed by this toothpaste, freshening breath, and fight cavities “without the shock or burn of strong mint found in many adult toothpastes”.

“This is something I would not mind using myself”, as told by a happy user. This minty flavour will definitely be your child’s favourite in a short period of time.

Another parent was relieved to find this toothpaste as it was “good for picky kids and encourage stress-free brushing”. Some also find it less messy in the sink as they can do longer brushing without a mouthful of toothpaste.

“The kids are enjoying the results provided by the whitening toothpaste. They have been excited about showing off their sparkly white teeth to their friends! Parents are calling and asking what we are using because their kids want to use the same toothpaste and have whiter teeth as well.”

So Yes, I recommend this product, as I have 2 boys and I know they go crazy over Star Wars. .

7. KMF Berry Smart Obsessively Kids Toothpaste

This is another of my favourite, as it is easily available where I stay.

If you are looking for a toothpaste that goes beyond surface cleaning to deep clean even the root of the teeth where most bacteria live, this one does a good job and still leaves a fresh feeling.

One of the main features, like any other regular toothpaste, is that it has fluoride and calcium, so you need not worry about plaque, as these ingredients help prevent plaque build-up and fights cavities.

Lots of parents love this great natural toothpaste. They find it delicious and were so happy to find a toothpaste with no SLS and other toxins. They would definitely buy it again.

Also, this toothpaste is vegan & cruelty-free and eco-friendly, so you don’t have to worry that it was tested on animals.

It does not contain fluoride, triclosan, and SLS, the common ingredients in lots of toothpaste. Meet all the ticks for a perfectly safe toothpaste, so you can be assured that you are not putting any harmful stuff in your children’s teeth.

Kids will love the flavours of tea tree oil and aloe vera along with a popular berry flavour.

8. Orajel PAW Patrol Anticavity Fluoride Toothpaste, Bubble Berry, 4.2 oz.

Best Toothpaste For Children

Having a yummy bubble gum flavor, Orajel Anticavity Flouride Toothpaste provides effective cavity protection while bursting with flavor. For both parents and little ones, they will come to love alike. It comes in a rather great size tube which lasts a good while without spending a lot.

The tube is also easy for children to handle putting the toothpaste independently. It will dispense as a gel that foams up when brushing.

It contains fluoride that effectively fights against teeth decay with regular brushing. It also has Juassic World and Spiderman designs to wow the kids. Kids these days are so fortunate!

9. Mamaearth 100% Natural Berry Blast Toothpaste For Kid

Best Toothpaste For Children

Almost at the end of the list, but by no means the least favourite. You will know why.

Mamaearth’s 100% Natural Berry Blast Toothpaste is the first toothpaste that impressed me, as it is specially formulated with high quality ingredients like xylitol, aloe vera and stevia. Not only does it promotes healthy teeth and gums, it also cleans teeth thoroughly.

It is so safe that even babies can use. Even if in the event if some is accidentally, the level is still safe.

10. Colgate Kids Watermelon Burst Toothpaste, 4.6 Ounce (Pack of 2)

Best Toothpaste For Children

Colgate has been many people’s first toothpaste, incidentally my first prize that I ever won in a school dental competition!

It is amazing how innovative Colgate is to come with flavour in water melon compared to the typical grape, apple or strawberry that we can easily find.

Parents and children love how this liquid gel, not only gives a fresh watermelon taste, it also helps protect teeth against cavities and bad breath. Some children wanted to ” brush his teeth TWICE after this arrived. Not a normal response.”

Some users were not used to toothpaste being sold as gel and felt that the “consistency is a little more liquid than I would have liked and not a huge fan of the added colors but it is what it is”.

One said that this put an end to his search as he had spent a lot of time and money on searching and buying countless toothpaste.

Most especially like that this pair “came with a base to stand upright so it doesn’t fall out of our vanity each time the mirror is opened. I do think tubes are cheaper and you can get all the paste out of them but they just don’t stand well leaned against the inside.

My wife and I use prescription Colgate Prevident once a day and I love the easy to use bottle and the liquid toothpaste is really nice for putting on a small amount.

So when I found this Colgate liquid toothpaste in the exact same bottle I was sold. I knew my kids would like the watermelon flavor and they do.

It is easy to put just one drop of the liquid toothpaste on the brush which is all a 2 and 4-year-old need, and they brush three times a day. The bottle is short and fits on the upper shelves too, which leaves more room for the electric toothbrushes on the bottom.

Also, the liquid seems to last quite a bit longer than a paste, so it a nice value. I recommend this toothpaste.”

This is also suitable for children who dislike mint, but may be able to accept the watermelon taste.
